POLAND

July 24-30, 2005

A train / bus return trip is being planned from Oberwesel am Rhein (near Koblenz) via Berlin to Elbing – Marienburg – Danzig with German and English commentary by Oskar Wedel, Prediger of the Mennonite Church Hannover. The bus capacity is 50 and these seats will be filled in the order of registrations received.

After lunch in the Youth Hostel, 13:26 departure by train from Oberwesel station to Koblenz; transfer train to Berlin-Zoo, arrival 20:01; bus transfer to Inselhotel, Hermannswerder, Potsdam (tel.: 0331-23200, www.Inselhotel-Potsdam.de), warm dinner buffet at the hotel.

By bus from Potsdam via Küstrin (border crossing  -  Canadian passport holders need a visa ), Landsberg an der Warte, Deutsch-Krone, Preussisch-Stargard, Marienburg (former Reichsstrasse 1) to Elbing; check-in at Hotel  Elzam in the city center (http://HotelsPoland.com), enter ‘Elblag’,  evening meal at the hotel and sightseeing of the old city directed by Dr. Henryk Milosz (Wiehler code: 4 2 11 1 2 )

8:00 departure to boat over the Rollberge, to Buchwalde (arrival 13:00), Marienburg – tour of the castle (limited to 2 hrs.), return via ‘kleines Werder’ (Wiehler country) – Klettendorf, Thörichthof, church in Pr. Rosengart (service), Grunau, ruins in Markushof, Kampenau, double-beamed bridge, dinner meal in the garden of ‘Restaurant beim Gestüt Cadinen’, return by bus to enjoy some ‘piwo’ and Polish Gemütlichkeit in Elbing.

Walking tour of Elbing, reception by mayor at City Hall; opportunity for private trips with English or German speaking cab drivers (cost of taxi for about 6 hours is 50.00 Euros – bookings suggested at time of registration), remainder of group tours the ruins of Schlobitten castle and on to Frauenburg, by boat across the ‘Frisches Haff’ to Kahlberg, return by bus via Stegen (beautiful beach – bring appropriate garments), Tiegenhof, Lienau-Schöpfwerk bei Kalteherberge, evening meal in restaurant (tba) in Elbing.

Trip to Danzig, 10:00 service at the former Mennonite church, walking tour to noon, 2 hrs free time to shop and lunch, 14:00 tour of  Port of Danzig and on to Westerplatte – get information on the beginnings of WW II, return via Lakekopp, Eichwalde, Heubuden cemetery to Elbing; farewell dinner at Restaurant Vogelsang, Elbing and return to hotel.

Friday, July 29, 2005
07:00 depart for Berlin, arrive at Inselhotel, Potsdam ca. 17:00, evening meal at the hotel, debriefing on the hotel terrace by the lake.

Saturday, July 30, 2005
08:15 bus transfer from hotel to Bahnhof-Zoo; depart 09:55 and arrive in Oberwesel station at 16:25 to end this trip and resume individual travels.
